Life in the winter is exemplified by the movie "Fargo". Farms and ranches stretch across the plains from the Red River Valley in the east to the Badlands in the west. North Dakota's lack of population is eceeded only by Alaska, Vermont, and Wyoming. Over the past 20 years, North Dakota has experienced a declining population.
